Pedestrian sentenced over cyclists death

Auriol Grey has been sentenced to 3 years after being convicted of manslaughter, following behaviour that led to the death of an elderly cyclist.

The trial at Peterborough Crown Court heard that Celia Ward was cycling along on a pavement, when the two women were due to pass each other. CCTV captured the incident where the defendant can be seen gesturing and shouting at Mrs Ward to "get off the pavement". The jury heard how Mrs Ward fell into the path of a car. The vehicle was unable to stop or take avoiding action and Mrs Ward was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Sergeant Mark Dollard, who investigated, said: “This is a difficult and tragic case". Grey who has cerebral palsey and partially sighted, lives in adapted special accommodation. Miranda Moore KC defending said in mitigation that "there was no intention to cause harm or an obvious risk of harm" and stated she would be making an appeal against the sentence.
