Mortgage Fraud

Some years after the breaking of the global economic crisis, it appears that banks are continuing to interrogate their books in an attempt to isolate cases of mortgage fraud on which their security may be at risk. Members of chambers both prosecute and defend in the resulting cases at all levels of seriousness, from individual instances of inflated income to large-scale conspiracies orchestrated by professionals. Examples of the latter include Operation Valgus (2008 to present) – reportedly the largest mortgage fraud ever tried in England and Wales, involving over 1,000 mortgages and over a dozen defendants.
