Charles Judge

It is with great sadness that 5 Paper Buildings has to report that Charles Judge unexpectedly died on 10 November 2025.

Charlie was called in 1981 and joined 5PB in the early 1990s. He spent over 40 years at the criminal Bar. Throughout his career he was a cheerful and popular presence both in Chambers and in robing rooms across the South-Eastern Circuit, particularly in East Anglia where he lived. Charlie epitomised everything that is good about our profession. Whether prosecuting or defending, he was hard-working, conscientious and scrupulously fair. Over the years many pupils and junior tenants benefitted from his calm, friendly and wise advice when faced with seemingly intractable problems; he had seen it all before and was happy to pass on his experience.

Although in recent years ill-health restricted the scope of his practice (and his ability to play tennis), he always relished the court day. He made friends with everyone: judges, lawyers and staff alike.

He was a fundamentally decent man and his colleagues in Chambers are all stunned at his untimely passing.

We send our deepest condolences to his daughters Brodie and Amy, to whom he was devoted, and to his wider family.
