Following a four-month trial, Michael Hick, leading Anthony Hucklesby and instructed by the CPS Specialist Fraud Division, secured the conviction of five Defendants involved in the laundering of funds stolen from London-based film production company Rooks Nest Entertainment.
In late 2014/early 2015, using sophisticated techniques, fraudsters were able to hijack the email account of the company’s owner and use it to trick the company’s accountants and bank into making transfers of £1,444,134 to bank accounts controlled by the Defendants and other third parties. The funds were subsequently filtered through numerous layers within the financial system in the UK and beyond in order to disguise their source and to facilitate their withdrawal.
The Defendants received combined sentences in excess of 19 years.
