Continued success of private prosecutions

On 13 June 2019 at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court, Richard Padley was instructed by Russell Cooke, acting on behalf of the Federation Against Copyright Theft, prosecuted Santokh Chahal and John Hart for showing Sky Sports at their pub on ten occasions over the course of the 2018-2019 football season without entering into a commercial agreement with Sky. These offences can result in a pub gaining a significant financial advantage over other pubs local to the area who lawfully pay to show Sky Sports. Both defendants were fined and ordered to pay the prosecutors costs in full. In addition the court ordered the forfeiture of their respective licences to manage and operate their pub.
