Robert O’Sullivan QC and Stephen Hopper appeared for the prosecution in the case of R v Koslowski and others (Wood Green Crown Court). The trial lasted 8 weeks and concerned an allegation of fraud involving false expenses claims for sign language interpretation. The fraudulent claims totalled in excess of £900,000. The case was unusual in that all four defendants and a number of prosecution witnesses were deaf. All gave evidence in British Sign Language via court interpreters. The lead defendant, Bianca Koslowski, was convicted of the fraud and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment and disqualified from acting as a company director for 8 years. Confiscation proceedings will follow.
