On 21st March at Birmingham magistrates Court, three directors of a pub company were convicted after trial of 65 offences for the dishonest reception and live broadcasts of Sky Sports programs in three pubs in the Midlands. One of the publicans was also prosecuted and pleaded guilty to 8 offences. The Prosecution was for criminal breaches of S 297(1) and (2) of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988.
The case was the culmination of a 2 year investigation into the dishonest activities of the directors into the repeated showing live Sky Sports broadcasts, including Premier League, Championship and League Cup football and test match Cricket. The defendants’ dishonesty evaded in excess of £130,000 owed to Sky in subscription fees. The defendants continued to commit offences even after they had received the first set of summons.
The case has been adjourned to the 30th April for sentence.
