You will receive regular informal feedback from your supervisor throughout the pupillage. There will also be more formal assessments, at the end of the first and second 4 month periods. These assessments are designed to provide constructive guidance, letting you know the areas in which you are performing well, and those where you can improve. They also provide you with an opportunity to discuss any aspect of your pupillage.
How does Chambers decide whether to offer a pupil a tenancy?
Chambers will ballot on the decision before the end of the twelve months. Each member of Chambers has a vote. A majority of two-thirds is required in favour of a successful candidate.
The decision is taken sufficiently early to allow a proper opportunity for any unsuccessful pupil to secure a third six month pupillage elsewhere. Experience has shown us that those who complete pupillage at 5pb, but who are not offered tenancy here, are generally successful in securing pupillages/tenancies in other sets of Chambers.
