Public Law / Public Inquiries
Chambers & Partners 2009 recommends Nicholas as a leading junior for his work in Public Inquiries, noting that “[f]or ten years or so now he has been in some of the major matters of the day.” He acted as junior counsel in the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, working as part of the legal team representing a large number of serving and former soldiers. At the Rosemary Nelson Inquiry, he represented members of the police team investigating the murder of Mrs Nelson, the solicitor murdered by terrorists in Lurgan, Northern Ireland.
Crime
As a criminal advocate, Nicholas has represented both the Crown and those charged with the most serious offences in the Crown Court, Court of Appeal and Privy Council. He is a Grade 4 prosecutor, CPS London.
His experience in the fields of both public and criminal law is particularly in the conduct of large and complex cases, including those involving the consideration of sensitive material.
Licensing
Nicholas advises and appears on behalf of applicants, local authorities and others in relation to a broad range of licensing cases and schemes. He is a contributor to Paterson’s Licensing Acts.
