Date of Call: 2004
Alan was called to the Bar in 2004. He both prosecutes and defends, with an emphasis on the former.
As a junior tenant he was seconded to the Asset Forfeiture Unit of the Revenue and Customs Prosecutions Office (as it then was) for eight months. Whilst there he worked exclusively on restraint and confiscation, handling several very high value cases. He has since developed his expertise in this field and has been instructed by a number of local authorities to advise in restraint proceedings and other issues arising under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, in particular the powers and duties of accredited financial investigators.
Alan has also been instructed in a number of local authority prosecutions. These have involved offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994, the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988, the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 , the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 and the Animal Health Act 1981.
Recently he, led by Miles Bennett, prosecuted to conviction the first ticket tout to face charges under the Fraud Act 2006 on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council.
Outside his professional life Alan is an omnivorous music fan; this year alone he has attended concerts given by artists as diverse as the Academy of Ancient Music, the CBSO and Lady Gaga! He is a also keen amateur actor. In recent years he has taken roles in the works of Shakespeare, Sondheim and Wilde.
